The upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will offer two playable characters, differing not only in origin, but also in gameplay. As a result, we can complete the game's available missions in different ways and explore the surrounding world from various perspectives.

Yasuke and Naoe

The first character is Yasuke - a samurai originally from Africa, who came to Japan with the Portuguese. At first, he was an ordinary slave, but he managed to succeed in serving Oda Nobunaga thanks to his abilities. It's noteworthy that this is the first historical figure we will have the opportunity to embody in the series.

According to the devs, Yasuke is meant to serve both as a warning against the threat of colonization, but also as an example of the meritocracy that was established at that time.

AC: Shadows and history

Ubisoft presented this description of Yasuke, taking advantage of the limited knowledge about the samurai's life. Preserved historical records say that (probably) he traveled to the Land of the Rising Sun alongside Alessandro Valignano - a Roman Catholic missionary from southern Italy, sent there as an inspector of Jesuit missions. Some time later, the ruler Oda Nobunaga took an interest in Yasuke, who then joined the ruler's service as a warrior. So, this hero should be viewed as a character inspired by history rather than being strictly historical.

The second character is Naoe - a young shinobi who is slightly more reminiscent of the characters known from the classic Assassin's Creed series. He sneaks around, jumps on roofs and uses all kinds of gadgets, such as a climbing hook or a hidden blade.

Naoe is the daughter of one of the most renowned shinobi of that time, Fujibayashi Nagato, who imparted his skills to her. The devs describe her as "capable of taking down any enemy while showing compassion to victims of war and corruption."

Two sides of the same coin

The fates of the characters are connected by the figure of Nobunaga, whose goal is to unite Japan. In order to accomplish this, he dispatches his army, including Yasuke, to the province of Iga, where Naoe and her father reside. As we can easily guess, the relationship between these two doesn't start off in the best way.

The developers aim to ensure that players can complete the game in various ways by giving us access to these two characters. The powerful samurai's gameplay style will be more reminiscent of Eivor, while the nimble Naoe will operate in the shadow of Bayek. Furthermore, due to the distinct nature of these characters, we will gain entirely different viewpoints on the events unfolding in the game world.

Assassin's Creed: Shadows will be released on November 15 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
